In honor of the inauguration of the Rodovia Transamazônica (“Transamazon Highway”), Brazilian composer Omar Fontoura in 1972 composed the Transbrasil suite. The audio shown here was taken from the original artist’s work, a video that exhibits an old record player inside an aquarium playing Fontoura’s composition until it is completely submerged by water and becomes inoperative. The work is part of the photographic series A Última Aventura, in which the artist investigates material and symbolic vestiges remaining from the construction of the Rodovia Transamazônica, a pharaonic, utopian and boastful project relegated to abandonment and oblivion.
